Development in 2003

With the changes in school venues, the school changed names three times and made great-leap-forward development. In 2003, the school passed the assessment of the Ministry of Education, and upgraded to a general higher institution for undergraduates, becoming one of the nine private institutions to offer four year programs and the only one of the private focused on foreign language education. The school, with 4,000 students on campus, changed its name to Jilin Huaqiao University of Foreign Languages. Huaqiao symbolizes the essence of the university --- serving as a bridge to Chinese culture and Western culture, through which Chinese sons and daughters go to the world. On the one hand, we guide students to learn the etiquette and connotation of oriental culture and civilization; on the other hand, students are encouraged to learn the intellectual and practical spirit of western civilization.

In 2003, Peng Peiyun, the former vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee and honorary president of China Women’s Federation, participated in our university’s unveiling ceremony. Zhou Ji, minister of education and Zhang Paoqing, vice minister of education, visited the university. We won the title of “The First Top 20 China’s Non-Government Universities of Excellence”. President Qin attended the Ninth National Women’s Congress, and was elected as “One Hundred China Outstanding Female Entrepreneurs” the same year in October.
