From October 22 to 24, the 17th China National Model United Nations Conference (17th CNMUNC) was opened in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Five students from JISU participated in this conference and achieved excellent performance. He Yuqi, a Spanish major (1903) from the School of Western Languages, has become the first JISU student elected in to the presidium of CUMUNC. On behalf of Chinese representatives, Li Xinrui from the School of English delivered a speech and won the Best Stand Award with high praise by the ambassadors Hua Liming and Huang Yongan. Song Yuxuan, an English major (2004) from the School of English, and Huang Qun, a translation major (2002), delivered a speech on behalf of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Chen Xinyi, a German major (1903) from the School of Western Languages, attended this conference as a representative of the Xinhua News Agency.

Since its founding in 2004, the CNMUNC has been held 17 times, and is expanding to be the most influential Model United Nations for college students in China. The conference was hosted by the UN Association of China, co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), and organized by the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. The event attracted 300 students from Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Beijing University, and many more. Hu Wen Li, Vice President and Director-General of the UN Association of China; Shen Xiaorong, the Deputy Secretary of CPC in University of Electronic Science and Technology of China; and Chen Kai, the Counselor from the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of MFA attended the opening ceremony. Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, sent a video addressing and a congratulating those at the conference. Ambassador Wu Hongbo, Co-dean of the Institute for Global Sustainable Development at Tsinghua University and the Special Representative for Department of European Affairs of the MFA, made a report themed The United Nations and Chinese Diplomacy.
This Conference was themed “Write a Splendid Chapter and Build a Community with A Shared Future for Mankind”. The students played the part of diplomats of different countries and had in-depth discussions on six topics: Equal Access to Vaccination, Poverty Elimination and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, Global Trade Terms Improvement, Equal Access to Education, Refugee Childrens’ Rights Protection, Climate Change and the Environment. Follow-up reports were also conducted by 7 media groups in the Main Press Center which consisted of college student delegates.
Model United Nations Association of JISU (MUNA of JISU) was established in 2009. Its aim is to provide opportunities for JISU students to understand the operation mode of UN, learn the realities and policies of every country, and to enhance the international cultural exchanges. All in order to develop the international communication skills such as diplomatic negotiation. In previous CMUNAC, members in MUNA of JISU achieved excellent results and have become a major participant in the CMUNC in Northeast China and all over the country. This time, JISU students perfectly presented their passion and talent to colleges and universities at home and abroad, which greatly inspired the students’ commitment to international affairs.
The students expressed that through this experience they gained a deeper understanding of the United Nations Rules and Procedure. They further practiced their English writing and academic research abilities, and promoted skills of adaptability, organization, and coordination. As the youth in the new age, they are shouldering an important mission. Everyone needs to make contributions to help maintain world peace and develop friendly relations between nations via hard work and strong skills.
