On November 27, having been invited by President Qi He, the ambassador Ning Fukui delivered a specialized report titled “Family and Country: A Diplomat’s Experience – Maybe you can become a diplomat one day”. Over 1,000 students attended the event.

As a graduate of Kim Il-Sung University in Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), Ning once served as the deputy director of the Asian Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, director of the Border and Ocean Affairs Division, ambassador for and deputy representative of Korean Peninsula Affairs (KPA) (Six Sides Negotiations), counselor of the Chinese Embassy in North Korea, ambassador in Cambodia, ambassador in South Korea, ambassador in Thailand, and so on. He is now part of the Public Diplomatic Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the report, he explained the purpose and value of diplomacy, introduced related works, and shared some of his diplomatic experiences. He also explained how to study foreign languages well, according to his own experiences, and put what one learns into practice. He put forward that a diplomat should stay loyal to his or her country and party with through word and action. It is our duty to obey orders from those who have authority over us. Even if a diplomat is designated to underdeveloped areas or war-torn regions, that person should perform his duties responsibly. Ning’s speech earned a warm applause from the entire audience.

The report caused great responses from students. Wang Chang, a freshman studying Russian, said, “After this report, I understand more clearly how important diplomatic work truly is. Not only does the diplomat represent himself with his demeanor and words, but he represents his country as well. Thus, they should be excellent in foreign language and understand and show great respect to other cultures. When in a foreign country, a diplomat sacrifices time with his family and must work hard despite the emotional stress of being far from home.… I sincerely respect diplomats!” Jiang Min, a first-year postgraduate studying Chinese international education, mentioned: “The core virtues that diplomats must display are loyalty, responsibility and dedication. Youth should own these virtues so as to shoulder their responsibility of serving their country and society well.”
