The Opening Ceremony of the School Year 2018-2019 in HQUFL

The opening ceremony and commendation conference of the 2018-2019 School Year at Jilin Huaqiao University of Foreign Language (HQUFL) was held in the gymnasium on the morning of September 17, 2018. President Qin He attended the ceremony, along with other school leaders, directors of all the departments, teachers and parents. Those who were also present at the ceremony included all the freshmen and postgraduates enrolled in 2018 and some undergraduate upper-classmen.

The opening ceremony started with the national anthem of China. Three students delivered speeches on behalf of the undergraduates, freshmen and postgraduate freshmen respectively. Jonathan Barta spoke at the ceremony representing all the faculty members.

Vice President Yang Junfeng and Vice President Huang Jiying respectively announced the honor roll of advanced units and outstanding individuals as well as the names of scholarship winners from the 2017-2018 school year. President Qin He and other school leaders presented the prizes to the recognized units and individuals.

In the 2017-2018 school year, altogether 1,649 undergraduates won the President Scholarship and scholarships in First, Second, and Third Class, and 79 postgraduates received Annual Scholarships. There were 370 students who won individual awards in all the national and provincial competitions. Prizes also went to 146 Merit Students, 218 Excellent Student Cadres, 34 Advanced Classes and 174 Honor Dormitories.

Based on the NME (National Matriculation Examination) scores, “Admission Scholarship” was conferred on 119 new postgraduates, the “Excellent New Student Award” on 15 freshmen, and the “Special Scholarship of Foreign Language” on another 9 freshmen.

President Qin He delivered an important speech, acknowledging the excellent performance of all the freshmen in military training and elaborating the essence and importance of the college education. She explained that a university is termed as such because of the height of social and moral civilization it presents, its persistent pursuit of self-perfection and development, and its spirit to transform the present, create the future and move with the tides. The university should not only teach the students to learn to be self-reliant and independent with genuine talents and practical learning, but also establish a correct student-centered concept of university. The mission of the university lies in its dedication to and responsibility for the future of the state and nation, cultivating more distinguished citizens who love the motherland, serve the community, and excel in morality and virtues.

President Qin He shared with the audience the feats accomplished in the last 23 years she has devoted to the school. The “13th Five-Year Plan”, she pointed out, is a critical stage for the school development, during which the school is quickening its steps to make it a high-level and high-quality university. With an international and modern library, the unique “Global Villages,” and the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Building under construction, all the undergraduates and postgraduates can enjoy good learning and living conditions and qualified teaching resources. Consequently, all the students can thrive well and flourish better here in the school.

President Qin He offered four good-will wishes to all the students.

First, she wished all the students to aim high. They should “keep their eyes in the sky and steps on the ground.” They should learn to combine their individual ideals with national fate and development. Everyone should set up their ambitious life-goals as early as possible and work hard to realize the ideals.

Second, she encouraged all the students to stick to high standards of morality. “Virtue” is an essential quality of college students, and a basis of and prerequisite to their growth and success. College students should learn to cultivate their morality, and foster a healthy mindset, and excel in morality and virtues.

Third, she wished all the students to set their mind on their studies. All the students should realize that college days are the most critical period in their life. Their first priority is to study and they have to take great pains to learn. They should cherish their college days and take it as a responsibility to work hard with a view to serving our society. She called on all the students to learn in a right way, and make conscientious efforts to learn so they can enjoy more brilliant moments of their youth.

Last but not least, she wished all the students to advance in practice. That means they should learn to think, practice, and act. All the students should adhere to the school motto “bridging Chinese and foreign cultures and striving to be talents.” While they are acquiring knowledge, they should also take an active part in all kinds of activities in which to make use of their expertise and foster their talents. All the students should devote time into public welfare undertakings, volunteer service and social activities in line with the school guidelines of responsibility and public spirit. They should work hard to develop self-capability of integrated language performance, cross-cultural communication, practical creation and adaptable development.

President Qin He finally said, “Dear students, you are the future of China, the hope of the Chinese nation, and the pride of HQUFL. I hope you will cherish every minute and shoulder responsibilities on your own to become preeminent university students in the new era!”

The profound, philosophical and thought-provoking speech of President Qin He won the applause from all the faculty members and students.

The ceremony ended with the school song.
