A Great Pleasure to Study in China
Jun 21, 2019 01:35 PM

Dear leaders, teachers and students,

Good afternoon!
I am Su Huina from Indonesia, a country boasting thousands of islands.
The title of my speech today is a Great Pleasure to Study in China.

First of all, I want to share with you a piece of memories about my connection with Chinese. When I was in the fourth grade of elementary school, I read a Chinese sentence in the Indonesian textbook, which meant “learn knowledge and explore culture in China.” At that time, I was confused about this sentence. What is interesting is that this sentence is one of the well-known aphorisms about learning in our country. However, why does it only refer to China rather than other countries? I felt so curious about it. I have embarked on a journey of loving Chinese since then.

In reflecting upon my initial period of learning Chinese, I rhythmically read the pronunciation and intonation of Chinese characters just like singing a song. I also practiced writing the characters which are squarely shaped of different strokes just like painting a picture. Moreover, I found great joy amidst the process of understanding the characters. For example, when you write the Chinese character “mu,” which means wood, it is just like drawing a tree; and “wang,” which means a net, resembles a net. The Chinese character “yu,” meaning fish, is also shaped like a fish. So, it is wonderful to make a word by imitating the shape. This is the charm of Chinese and the great wisdom of the Chinese people.

Of course, every child likes to listen to stories. I was a little girl who liked to listen to the Chinese stories, from the myths of the earth, the moon, the sun, the water, and so on. The profound Chinese culture has a history of 5,000 years and is even more amazing. So, it is no wonder that there will be such a saying, “learn knowledge and explore culture in China,” in Indonesia.

I’m really lucky to know and fall in love with Chinese as I grow older. The little bit of fun accumulated in my childhood has turned into such valuable memories. And now the young girl has left her hometown and came to study in China, the country she has admired since her childhood. As for me, it is a great honor to study in China, which will also be a precious opportunity to enrich my life experience.

I gain access to another distinct world through Chinese. Today, I have witnessed a leap forward in the development in China, including convenient transportation, diverse means of traveling, ubiquitous shared bicycles, online car-hailing service, expedient metro systems, and super-fast High Speed Rails. I have also experienced advancements of such developed online payment systems as Alipay and WeChat Pay which help me enjoy going-out without a wallet. I have made new friends here and painstakingly learned Chinese with friends from all around the world. It is encouraging for me to communicate with them and work hard together to realize our goals.

Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the China Scholarship Council and JISU. Thank you very much for providing me with such valuable opportunities to study in China. I am also very grateful to my parents, my family, and my friends for their encouragement and support. In the next four college years, I will cherish this precious opportunity, making arduous efforts to enrich myself and live up to myself, my time, and my family.

Great pleasure to study in China! Hello, China! Hello, Chinese!
Looking forward to my learning here!
Thanks a lot!
