In 1995, Jilin Huaqiao Foreign Languages Institute was approved by the former Jilin Provincial Education Commission as an institution of higher learning for self-funded students.

In 1996, the institute started to construct buildings and it began to take shape.

In 1997, it ranked the top compared to other provincial colleges for self-funded students.

In 1998, the school was listed as the National Higher Education Diploma Examination Pilot College.

In 1999, the school was renamed as Jilin Huaqiao Foreign Languages Vocational College approved by the Ministry of Education, incorporating into the National Ordinary College Admission Plan.

In 2000, the scale of the school expanded with the number of students increased tenfold as compared to that in early years.

In 2001, we had land acquisition of more than 550 mu in the Jingyue Tourism Development Zone, starting the construction of a new campus.

In September 2002, the construction of the first phase of the new campus was completed, and the school successfully moved onto the new campus. At the end of October, the school was assessed and evaluated by the expert group of the National Appraisal Committee for the establishment of Higher Education Institution.

In 2003, the Ministry of Education approved the formal upgrading of the college to run four-year undergraduate programs as Jilin Huaqiao University of Foreign Languages, becoming the first private university in the province to focus on foreign languages teaching. In the same year the school won the title of “the Top 20 Non-Government Universities in China”.

In 2004, the school started to enroll students in Northeast China and other provinces, the student population reaching 5076. And the graduate employment rate reached 98.2%, ranking the first in the province. The campus expanded into 760,000 square meters, and construction area 180,000 square meters.

In 2005, the school was approved to confer bachelor’s degrees and began to carry out joint master’s programs with other universities. The school started the undergraduate admission in many provinces throughout the country, and was allowed to enroll students through national unified recruitment. The graduate employment rate reached 99.4%, still ranking the first in the province. The students enrolled this year were more than 6000.

In 2006, we enrolled students from 24 provinces (or regions, municipalities) into 37 four-year and three-year programs, and in the same year we won the titles of “Top 20 Non-Government Higher Education Universities in Teaching Quality” and “China Top 10 Best Credit Private Universities”. Our university ranked the third according to the “2006 China Evaluation Report on Private Universities”.

In 2007, the school was designated by the provincial government as a key institution of higher learning in Jilin Province.

In 2010, the school undertook a pilot study on “exploring the mode of running a non-profit private university” with the approval of the State Council, and it also successfully passed the MOE Accreditation of Undergraduate Education.
